- Construction Status Reports for the Belvedere Elementary School Addition & Renovation Project (Dr. Murphy)
In an effort to keep the Board current on the status and budget of this school construction project, the Architects for this project, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and the Administration prepare a monthly status report for the Board’s review.
- Construction Status Reports for the Midland Valley High Addition Project (Dr. Murphy)
In an effort to keep the Board current on the status and budget of this school construction project, the Architects for this project, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and the Administration prepare a monthly status report for the Board’s review.
- Construction Status Reports for the Millbrook Elementary Additions & Renovations Project (Dr. Murphy)
In an effort to keep the Board current on the status and budget of this school construction project, the Architects for this project, Goodwyn Mills and Cawood (GMC), and the Administration prepare a monthly status report for the Board’s review.
- Construction Status Reports for the North Augusta High School Phase III Addition Project (Dr. Murphy)
In an effort to keep the Board current on the status and budget of this school construction project, the Architects for this project, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and the Administration prepare a monthly status report for the Board’s review.
- Construction Status Reports for the Ridge Spring-Monetta Elementary Phase 3 Addition Project (Dr. Murphy)
In an effort to keep the Board current on the status and budget of this school construction project, the Architects for this project, LS3P Associates LTD., and the Administration prepare a monthly status report for the Board’s review.
B.CONSENT ITEMS: The following items will be voted on as a group, individual items may be discussed prior to a vote being taken.
- Final Contract Documents/Budget for the Hammond Hill Elementary Addition and Renovations Project (Dr. Murphy)
Cheatham Fletcher Scott Architects, P.C. has completed the final working drawings and specifications for the construction of the Hammond Hill Elementary School Additions project and are prepared to present these final plans and construction budget under separate cover to the Board for approval.The base bid is a 24 classroom addition and Alternate #1 is a kitchen, cafeteria, and lab addition.Due to concerns with manufacture delivery delays and labor, the costs have increased since design development approval on March 24, 2020.The original budget approved for the $90 million bond project was $15 million.As the scope and project developed, the Design Development Budget increased and was approved on March 24, 2020 for $18,685,345.00.The construction document estimate increased another $1,994,655.00.The overall budget needed for the base bid and Alternate #1 is $5,680,000.00 more which will come from the 8% Five Year Facility Improvement Contingency.
- Award of the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Innovative Arts Works Grant to Aiken Intermediate School – FY21 (Mrs. Glover)
Aiken Intermediate School has been awarded the SC State Department of Education Innovative Arts Works Grant in the amount of $4,000.00 for the project Achieving World Class Potential in the Visual Arts.This grant will assist in developing and implementing a standards-based arts education program that supports quality arts education programs and significantly improve student achievement in the arts.Funds will be used to purchase supplies and materials.
- Award of the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Innovative Arts Works Grant to Paul Knox Middle School – FY21.
Paul Knox Middle School has been awarded the SC State Department of Education Innovative Arts Works Grant in the amount of $4,000.00 for the project Premier Media Art, Critical Thinking & Digital Technology Program.This grant will assist in developing and implementing a standards-based arts education program that supports quality arts education programs and significantly improve student achievement in the arts.The funds will be used to pay for substitutes, visiting artists, cameras and accessories, printing services, and other related equipment, materials and supplies.
- Central Carolina Community Foundation Grant Donation for Area 3 Elementary School Media Centers – FY21
The Central Carolina Community Foundation has awarded a grant in the amount of $3,000.00 to be distributed equally to the six Area 3 elementary schools and are to be used to purchase books for the schools’ media centers.The following schools will each receive $500.00 for books their media centers:
Byrd Elementary School $500.00
Clearwater Elementary School $500.00
Gloverville Elementary School $500.00
Graniteville Elementary School $500.00
Jefferson Elementary School $500.00
Warrenville Elementary School $500.00
- Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Donation to RSM Middle School – FY21 (Mrs. Glover)
Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle School was given a $1,200.00 donation from Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.The funds from this donation will be used to purchase school supplies and materials for students.
- Rotary Club of Aiken Foundation Community Service Grant Donation to Byrd Elementary School – FY21 (Mrs. Glover)
Byrd Elementary School was given a $1,500.00 Community Service Grant donation from the Rotary Club of Aiken Foundation.The funds from this donation will be used to purchase books additional for the school’s media center.
- South Carolina Arts Commission – Arts in Basic Curriculum Grant Award – East Aiken School of the Arts – FY21
East Aiken School of the Arts has been awarded a South Carolina Arts Commission for the Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Grant in the amount of $10,000.00.The purpose of the ABC Grant is to assist schools and districts in developing and implementing arts initiatives that support quality arts education programs that significantly improve student achievement in the arts.The monies will be used to fund substitute teachers for arts teachers to conduct strategic planning to implement arts integration strategies across all grade levels, equipment, supplies and materials for theatre, music, dance and visual arts, informal and formal performances, artists-in-residence instruction, professional development, arts based field trips, instructional supplies and equipment maintenance.

- Submission of the John Deere Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Computer Science Grant Application by Ridge Spring-Monetta High School –FY22 (Mrs. Glover)
Ridge Spring-Monetta High School would like to submit an application for the John Deere Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Computer Science Grant in the amount of $10,000.00 for the 2021-2022 school year.The grant would support the expansion of the PLTW Computer Science Principles course.Grant funds would be used for PLTW Participation Fees, PLTW training for 2 teachers, and program related software, equipment and supplies.
C.INDIVIDUAL ITEMS:
- Personnel Appointments (Mrs. Hart)
The certified and classified personnel presented have been screened by the Human Resources Department, and interviewed, and/or approved by the Principal or supervisor for each location.
- Out-of-District Transfer Requests (Dr. Minolfo)
Board Policy JFAB allows the Aiken County Board of Education to arrange with other school districts for the interchange of students.The policy stipulates that non-resident students transfer into the District “the parent/legal guardian must assume responsibility for transportation. The Board will hold nonresident students to the behavioral and academic requirements set out in policy JFAA, admission of resident students.The district may charge tuition to nonresident students seeking to enroll in district schools.”
- Addition of Policy GBGAA Accommodation for Breastfeeding Mothers, Second Reading (Dr. MInolfo)
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed into law the South Carolina Lactation Support Act on June 25, 2020.This law intends to “promote health and to support those who wish to express breast milk at work by requiring employers to make reasonable efforts to provide workers with reasonable unpaid break time and space to express milk at work.” Additionally, the law states “Providing workers reasonable support to express milk on the job is crucial health measure and will benefit South Carolina’s economy by keeping nursing employees in the workforce.”
- Consideration for Two Additional Computer Technicians (Mr. Traxler)
The District’s 1:1 technology initiative for 2020-2021, funded with CARES money, reinforced the need for additional technology support for our schools, students, and staff.
The School Board approved creation of two computer technician positions as part of the original 2020-2021 budget.The positions have been funded by re-purposing (i.e. eliminating) a vacant coordinator position.Both technology positions have been filled.
