  1. Comprehensive Student Achievement Data Update (Mr. Laurence)
 
 
2.         Financial Report as of December 31, 2016 (Mr. Traxler)
 
            The financial report of December 31, 2016 is submitted in the approved format.
 
 
3.         Legislative Update (Mr. Liner)
 
 
  1. CONSENT ITEMS:  The following items will be voted on as a group.  Individual items may be discussed prior to a vote being taken.
 
 
1.         Ratification of Expulsions (Dr. Alford)
 
            The School Board, according to the Code of Laws of South Carolina Sections 59-63-240, is authorizes to expel students from school.  Although the Board may receive recommendations for expulsion from others, it solely is empowered to take the final expulsion action.
 
 
 
2.         Out-of-District Transfer Requests (Mr. Laurence)
 
            Board Policy JFABC allows the Aiken County Board of Education to arrange with other school districts for the interchange of students.  The policy stipulates that when students transfer out of the District, “the School District of Aiken County shall assume no responsibility for tuition to the receiving district.”
 
 
 
3.         Request from an International Travel and Exchange Program Seeking Approval to Place Foreign Students in District Schools (Mr. Laurence)
 
School Board Policy JFABB establishes guidelines for the admission of exchange students to the School District of Aiken County.  Prior to a request for placement of a specific student, the “sponsoring organization must petition the Board for recognition/approval and to obtain the Board’s willingness to participate in the organization’s program of student exchange.”
 
 
 
 
4.         Clark and Concordia Donation to North Augusta Middle School, LBC Middle School and Paul Knox Middle School – FY17 (Dr. Washington)
 
Clark and Concordia has donated the cost for materials and training to North Augusta Middle School, LBC Middle School, and Paul Knox Middle School to support their robotics programs.  Sumo Bots, a type of robot, will be supplied for robotics team members.  Clark and Concordia is providing enough robots for two teams of 10 at North Augusta Middle School, two teams of 10 at LBC Middle School, and one team of 10 at Paul Knox Middle School.  Students will also learn and develop skills in coding.  This donation of supplies and training is worth approximately $4,500 for North Augusta Middle School, $4,500 for LBC Middle School, and $2,250 for Paul Knox Middle School.
 
 
 
 
5.         Submission of the Summer Reading Camp Community Partnership Grant (Dr. Washington)
 
            The General Assembly has provided funding to the State Department of Education for the Summer Reading Camp Community Partnership competitive grant opportunity whereby community organizations and school districts can collaborate to provide summer reading camp activities during the mandated Read to Succeed summer reading camp.  In this Summer Reading Camp Partnership, a cohort of approximately 500 second and third grade students who are significantly below grade-level reading proficiency from elementary schools across the district will participate in a six-week program that focuses on reading, writing, listening, and researching skills.  With the $42,000 provided by the grant, the school district proposed a community partnership with the Salvation Army Nancy Moore-Thurmond Boys and Girls Club of Aiken to extend the hours of the Summer Reading Camp day in order to move the cohort of students closer to proficiently reading on grade level.
 
 
 
 
6.         Submission of SC State Department of Education Arts Curricular Innovation Grant Application by East Aiken School of the Arts – FY18 (Dr. Washington)
 
            East Aiken School of the Arts would like to submit an application to the SC State Department of Education for the Arts Curricular Innovation grant in the amount of $18,000.  Funds will be used for summer arts institutes, professional development for teachers, and art supplies.
 
 
 
 
7.         Submission of the Farmer’s Insurance Dream Big Teacher Challenge Grant – Aiken Middle School – FY18 (Dr. Washington)
 
            Aiken Middle School is requesting to submit a $100,000 Farmer’s Insurance Dream Big Teacher Challenge grant application.  Aiken Middle School will use this grant to meet its goal of having a superior fine arts program.  A big part of meeting this goal is having up-to-date and functional teaching and learning spaces.  Funds from this grant will be used to purchase technology for the fine arts department, equipment to update our stage so that it is functional space for performances, band equipment, display cases and screens and new tables for visual arts, flooring to create an adequate dance practice and performance space, and choral risers.

1.         Personnel Appointments (Ms. Smalls)
 
            The certified and classified personnel presented have been screened by the Personnel Services Department and interviewed and approved by the Principals and Executive Directors.
 
 
 
2.         Waiver Request for Board Policy IJOA (Chaperone Ratio for Field Trips) (Dr. Washington)
 
            On April 18, 2017, ACPSD will participate in a joint venture with USC-Aiken to have Junior Preview Day.  This event will be held at UCS-Aiken and all juniors across ACPSD will be invited to have an on-campus experience at USC-Aiken.  USC-Aiken will have the juniors involved in presentations, campus tours and provide lunch.  They will reimburse ACPSD for all transportation costs and provide extra security on campus that day to assist in supervision.
 
 
 
    3.         Annual Review of the Five-Year Facility Improvement Plan (Dr. Foster)
 
In accordance with Policy FB, Facilities Planning, each year the Board of Education will review the Five-Year Facility Improvement Plan.
